EO2 Test

1.     Define Monotheism: Monotheism is believing in 1 God. Muslims believed in only one and its Allah.
2.     What is Qur’an? Qur’an is a book that was written by Muhammad and later after Muhammad’s death, his followers collected his writings in a book. In Qur’an there was written the right ways to live by Muhammad. He was writing his teachings in it too.
3.   Who is Muhammad?  Muhammad is the prophet of God, that’s how Muslims called him.  He was a person that wanted to prove everyone that there is only one God for Muslims and that they have to worship him.  Muhammad gave teachings to Muslims of the right way to live.
4.      First leader of Islam after Muhammad’s death. After Muhammad’s death the next leader of     Islam was Abu Bark. He was Muhammad’s friend. He promised the Muslims that he would go the same steps as Muhammad and try his best
5.     What does the term “Golden Age” means? The Golden Age means that it’s a point or time when an Empire is at its peak. Means that when an empire is at its best time.

Describe the connections between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.
·      There was a connection between Islam, Judaism and Christianity.  When Muhammad was alive he said that Jews and Christians were people of the “Holy Book.” Muhammad believed in that they were connected because Muslims had Qur’an and the Jews and Christians had the Holy Book. That’s why Jews and Christians were treated differently from the Muslims side.
What are the five pillars of Islam? Explain what they are and give a detailed description of them.
·      Faith- It says that there is no other God, except Allah.  Muslims had to worship Allah. They believed Allah with all of their hearts.
·      Prayer – You have to pray 5 times a day, facing Mecca. They prayed 5 times a day, because they were showing that they are worshiping the Allah.
·      Alms – Alms are the poor people that are needed the most. In front of the Mosque the Alms were sitting and the Muslims gave them money because they were most needed and it was very kind of Muslims to give money.
·      Fasting – when Ramadan happens once a year, the Muslims have to avoid food or drinking in the day. They have special times when they can eat. It was mostly at night. When they are ready to eat, they open the “ceremony” with reading couple of sentences from the Qur’an. Also they do the same thing when they are finished they close the “ceremony” with reading couple of sentences from the Qur’an.
·      Pilgrimage – every Muslim should visit Mecca once in their lifetime. They could visit Mecca only if they could provide a trip their. Mecca was counted as a holy place to Muslims.
These rules were made for Muslims to live the right way. And to follow these rules everyday.
Why did the Muslim community split and what were the results of this split?
·      Muslim community split because there were 2 groups of people that wanted different people to rule. They had different views of the future of Islam. There were 2 groups of people, first one is Sunni and the second one is Shi’a. Sunnis were the group of Muslims that accepted Umayyads and accepted their rule of choosing the caliph. The Shi’a were group of people that wanted the caliph to be the relative of the old caliph. This caused the Umayyad’s empire to collapse.
How was the Arabian Peninsula beneficial to the spread of Islam?
·      Arabian Peninsula was known for its great trading place/market. The Arabian Peninsula crossed Europe, Asia, and Africa. When Arabs moved into Arabian Peninsula their trading increased. Arabs were well known at that moment.  The Arabian Peninsula helped Muslim religion to spread because of Arabs and its good trading place. The Europe, Asia, and Africa were close to Arabian Peninsula and the Muslim religion spread fast because of Arabs.
