Vocabulary Words:

Republic- a form of government in which power rests with the citizens, who vote in order to elect leaders. It's where people vote for who they want the leader to be. The leader of the republic is Abd al Malik. 

Roman Catholic- relating to the Christian church of the west that is under the authority of the pope. it's a Christina religion where people are in the authority of the pope. The pope rules the Roman Catholic. 

Orthodox- relating to the Christian church that developed in the Byzantine Empire and is not under the authority of the pope. 

It's not under the pope's authority. 

Empire - a group of different cultures or territories led by a single all- powerful ruler. It's like a King or queen of the country that leads  the citizens to the right way. The empire's emperor might be cruel or good one.  The emperor of our empire is cruel he kills everyone who is on his way. 

Mosaic - a picture made out of many small colored tiles or pieces of glass. 

It's an piece of art made by broken glasses. 

Emperor - the ruler of an empire. The person who rules the empire. We have a strong emperor. 

Our Emperor is powerful and made big accomplishments. 

Justinian Code- a legal code, prepared under the direction of Byzantine emperor Justinian, regulated much of Byzantine life.

• Maybe it's a code that is Justice. Code that is made by Byzantine emperor. He named it after himself. 

Byzantine emperor named a code after him called Justinian Code. 

Stoicism - a Greek philosophy that stressed the importance of virtue, duty, and endurance and was especially influential in Ancient Rome.

Christianity- a religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus. •It's a religion where people believe in Jesus. •We are Christians that believe in Jesus.  

Schism - an official split between two groups. It's when people are divided into 2 groups. In the world people are divided into schisms. 

aqueducts- a structure designed to bring fresh water into a city or town. 

•it's like a well that brings water to the citizens. We have a aqueduct in the ancient town to bring us water.
